Why Use Lime?

Updated: Nov 13

Lime mortar is a good choice for pointing because it has many advantages over cement-based mortars, including:

  • Moisture control

Lime mortar is more porous and softer than cement, which allows moisture to evaporate from the joints. This helps prevent moisture from becoming trapped and causing damp walls.

  • Durability

Lime mortar is durable and flexible, and can withstand frost and salt damage.

  • Environmental

Lime mortar produces less carbon dioxide than cement.

  • Appearance

Lime mortar can enhance the appearance of bricks and stones, and can be color matched to other materials.

  • Compatibility

Lime mortar can be used with other green materials like hemp or straw bales.

  • History

Lime mortar has been used for thousands of years, and many structures built with lime mortar are still in good condition today.

When using lime mortar, it's important to be patient and carefully control the drying and suction. You should also use the minimum amount of water possible to reduce shrinkage.

Lime is a softer material which allows moisture to move through the joints. This moisture movement or 'breathability' reduces moisture in the building fabric, the likelihood of issues such as damp and the appearance of soluble salts that could appear on stone or brickwork.
